Right, so you’ve just had the pest blokes around to sort out your bug problem, and you’re thinking “Beauty, that’s that sorted!” But then a couple of days later, you’re seeing even more creepy crawlies than before. What on earth is going on?
Before you start thinking you’ve been done over or that the pest-control treatment was a complete dud, hold your horses. What you’re seeing is actually dead normal, and there are some solid reasons why it happens.
Here at VIP Pest Control, we’ve been helping Bendigo families deal with unwanted little visitors for over 40 years, and mate, we get calls about this stuff all the time. So let’s have a proper chat about why you might be seeing more pests after your pest-control treatment and what you can expect down the track.
They’re Doing a Runner from Their Hidey-Holes
The biggest reason you’re suddenly seeing more bugs is what we call the “flushing effect” – and no, we’re not talking about your dunny. When we rock up and start spraying, we’re basically evicting these little critters from their comfortable digs.
Picture this: you’ve been living peacefully in your bedroom for months, then someone starts going at your house with a sledgehammer. You’d shoot through pretty quick, wouldn’t you? That’s exactly what happens to cockies, ants, and spiders when we apply our treatments. They’ve been living the good life in your wall cavities, under your floorboards, and in other dark, cosy spots. Suddenly, their neighbourhood’s under attack, so they scarper and become way more visible.
This is actually a great sign – it means our pest-control services are doing their job and the pests are getting the boot from their established territories. Just because you can see them doesn’t mean there’s more of them; they’re just not hiding away where you can’t spot them anymore.
The Slow and Steady Approach Actually Works Better
Now here’s where it gets a bit clever. A lot of the treatments we use in professional pest control Bendigo operations are designed to work slowly, not give you that instant knockout punch. Sounds a bit backwards, doesn’t it? But there’s method to the madness.
Take ant colonies – if we used something that killed ants stone dead the moment they touched it, we’d only knock off the worker ants you can see wandering around your kitchen bench. The queen and most of the colony would still be sitting pretty underground, and within a few weeks, you’d be back where you started. Not ideal, right?
Instead, we use slow-acting baits that the worker ants drag back to the nest like they’re bringing home the weekly shopping. These baits get shared around the whole colony – including her majesty the queen – before they start doing their thing. This way, we can wipe out the entire colony instead of just the ones you can see.
Same deal with cockroaches. These tough little critters will take our bait back to where they all hang out together. Because the treatment works slowly, it spreads through the whole population before taking effect, which gives us much better long-term control.
During this time – anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks – you might notice more activity as the pests get a bit more active before the treatment does its job properly.
The Egg Factor
Here’s something most people don’t think about – pest life cycles. Our treatments are absolute weapons against adult pests, but eggs can be tricky little things to deal with. Insect eggs often have tough shells that can resist treatments, and they might keep hatching for days or even weeks after we’ve been around.
This is why decent pest control companies like us usually recommend follow-up treatments. We’re not trying to flog you more services – we’re working to break the pest lifecycle and make sure you get proper long-term control. That first treatment might knock off the adults and juveniles, but as new insects hatch from those protected eggs, you might see a temporary increase in activity before these newly hatched pests cop it from the residual treatment.
Your Place Might Still Be Too Attractive
Sometimes, the issue isn’t with our pest-control treatment but with things around your home that keep attracting new pests. Even the best pest-control services can’t overcome environmental factors that make your place a five-star resort for bugs.
Moisture issues are quite prevalent in Bendigo houses, particularly with our humidity and the unexpected rain. Leaking faucets, inadequate bathroom ventilation, or water spots under the house may continue to attract pests even after treatment. Cockroaches particularly thrive on moisture and may linger for years if they have a water source.
Food sources are another big one. Crumbs left on the bench, pet food sitting out all night, or dodgy food storage can keep attracting new pests from outside. While our treatments will sort out the existing populations, new bugs from next door might rock up if these attractants are still hanging around.
Poor sealing around doors and windows is also a common culprit, especially in older Bendigo homes where the weatherstripping might be shot or gaps have opened up around entry points.
You’ve Got Multiple Pest Parties Going On
Your home might be hosting more than one type of uninvited guest, and different pests need different approaches. A treatment that absolutely smashes cockroaches might not do much to ant populations, and vice versa. If you’ve got multiple pest issues, you might notice that while one type disappears, others seem to become more obvious.
This can make it look like the treatment hasn’t worked when it’s actually been spot-on against the targeted pests. During our initial inspections, our VIP Pest Control technicians work hard to identify all the pest types hanging around, but sometimes secondary infestations only become apparent after we’ve dealt with the main culprits.

What You Can Do While You Wait
While you’re waiting for the treatment to do its full job, there’s plenty you can do to help the process along:
Keep your place clean and dry, especially the kitchen and bathroom. Wipe down surfaces regularly, chuck food in sealed containers, and fix any dripping taps or pipes ASAP.
Don’t go crazy with the Mortein or other household sprays after we’ve been around. These can actually mess with our professional products and make them less effective – bit like mixing your drinks, really.
Be patient and try not to panic if you see more activity initially. Remember, this is often a sign that the treatment’s actually working.
Keep track of what you’re seeing. If you do need to give us a bell, specific info about where and when you’re spotting pests helps us work out the best next steps.
The VIP Difference
After more than 40 years helping Bendigo families sort out their pest dramas, we’ve pretty much seen everything when it comes to how bugs behave after treatment. Our experienced techs understand the local pest species, how they behave, and how they respond to different treatment methods.
We use targeted approaches that take into account the specific pests in your home, what time of year it is, and environmental factors unique to your property. Our treatments aren’t just designed to knock off current pest populations – they’re built to give you ongoing protection against future invasions.
When to Give Us a Call
While increased pest activity after treatment is normal in houses, there are times when you should be concerned. If you’re still seeing heaps of the same pests that we originally treated after 2–3 weeks, or if you notice signs of new breeding activity, it’s time to give us a ring for a follow-up.
Same goes if you notice pests in areas that weren’t previously affected, or if you’re seeing completely different types of bugs. Additional treatment might be needed, and that’s perfectly fine – it’s all part of getting the job done properly.
She’ll Be Right with a Bit of Time
Look, professional pest control is a process, not a magic wand situation. The increased pest activity you’re seeing after treatment is usually temporary and often shows that the treatment’s working as it should. Those pests are being forced out of their hiding spots and will soon encounter our treatment products.
At VIP Pest Control, we back our work with proper service guarantees because we know that effective pest management takes time and sometimes needs follow-up treatments. We’ve been helping out Victorian families create pest-free homes for over 40 years, and we’re here to back you through the entire process.
If you’re worried about pest activity after your recent treatment, or if you’re dealing with a new pest drama in Bendigo, just give us a holler. Our experienced team can check out your situation, give you the lowdown on what you’re experiencing, and make sure your home becomes the pest-free space you deserve.
To be fair, nobody should have to share their home with unwanted guests – and with the right professional pest-control treatment and a bit of patience, you won’t have to.
