A home is the biggest investment that most of us make in our lifetime. When homeowners discover a termite infestation attacking there home it can be for the most a most frightening experience gathering information on the best course of action can be just as frightening. Don't panic, take some time to get the facts that you are comfortable with.

Termites are found throughout all suburbs of Melbourne. Generally the termites responsible for the most attacks on homes are of the Coptotermes species. Identifying the species is important as this will tell the termite expert where the most probable nesting sites will be. Identifying the species is also important when dampwood termites are suspected as this termite can be controlled easily through non chemical methods.

Subterranean termites such as Coptotermes generally nest outside of the building and can be concealed in living and dead trees, behind sleeper walls and filled porches. There is generally a good chance that there is more than one nest within attacking distance of the affected structure. The nest causing you your damage could be in a neighbor's property.

Termites attack the house using subterranean highways and generally will build a mud tube up a house stump or foundation wall. If you discover one of these mud tubes it is best that you don't disturb the tube.

Homes built on concrete slabs are also prone to termite attack. Again the method of entry is usually up the side of the slab edge. Termites will follow service pipes under the slab and can enter through small cracks in the slab structure.

For timber floor structures the most practical method of controlling the termites attacking the structure is to apply a termiticide barrier. A horizontal barrier is applied to the soil area of the subfloor, a vertical barrier is applied around the edge of the building thus establishing an impenetrable barrier helping to block the termite's entry. A thorough inspection of possible nesting sites should also be carried out including checking neighbors yard areas. Nests detected should be directly treated.

    The Termite Control Process

Cutting through concrete footpaths and patios, or the removal of pavers - (so as to dig a trench) down to the top of the footing and the subsequent treatment of this trench may well be the first option under these circumstances.
